Leff: Mets Look Better Than You Think

As GBM's Mark Healey pointed out in his most recent column, the Mets have their fair share of concerns going into 2008.  They lack a fifth starter.  The management of their bullpen is questionable.  Several players had poor years on offense.  But to hear the average Mets fan tell it, the team is doomed to a second place finish in 2008.  The Mets may not be the favorite in the NL East, but they’re certainly not out of it before the season starts.

Why do we care so much about our local New York teams?

Alex Rodriguez, David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Derek Jeter don’t know us. Although it's likely that they're all nice people, it's quite possible they don’t stress about our mundane workplace deadlines.  So, why is it then, that all winter, fans have obsessed about the Mets starting pitching needs or whether the Yankees should trade Phil Hughes for Johan Santana?

We have seen many managers and head coaches come and go here in Gotham. Just over the last ten years there have been over twenty coaches and managers leading local teams. Baseball fans have seen the Mets and Yankees as the beacons of stability by only contributing four to that total.
