If you were the owner of a major league team and someone knocked on
your door telling you he could improve your pitching staff would you
listen? If this man claimed to be able to prevent injuries while
enhancing performance what would your reaction be? Now if I told you
this man had a Cy Young Award and a PhD in kinesiology would you at
least give his theories some credence? Former fourteen year major
leaguer and 1974 Cy Young Aware winner Dr. Mike Marshall possesses this
information. The problem is none of the thirty major league teams wants
to listen.

In a recent article on ESPN.com, Peter Gammons reopened an old
argument. The post, titled, "The Rich Get Richer," argued that the
wealth gap in Major League Baseball is destroying fair competition,
leaving only the wealthiest teams in the hunt. But like many other
followers of baseball, Gammons makes the common error of thinking that
money leads inherently to success, and he downplays the importance of
good baseball sense. The best teams do far more than just spend money.

The Mets have been shopping their prospects all over the majors in
search of the elusive ace, and the most recent stop on their tour
(after departing Minnesota and Oakland) is Baltimore. The Orioles have
been looking to trade their stud lefty Erik Bedard, and fortunately for
the Mets, there’s little to no chance the O’s will want to trade in the
division.

Expecting to hear Dan Haren, Erik Bedard or Johan Santana next, Mets
fans were disappointed and frustrated when it was revealed that
Milledge was traded for catcher Brian Schneider and outfielder Ryan

For the past three years, Gotham Baseball Magazine has tracked,
reported and discussed every single trade rumor involving former No. 1
pick Lastings Milledge. So to say that his trade to he Nationals on
Friday was an unlooked for event would be incorrect. The return of
Ryan Church and Brian Schneider was even less shocking, as SI.com's Jon
Heyman – who's doubling these days as a WFAN reporter – told us that it
was going to happen a week ago.
