Manuel's Coaching Staff
Mets
Written by Joe Janish

Supposedly, non-interim Mets manager Jerry Manuel (pictured, left - photo by bB. Menzel) will have a say in his coaching staff — a luxury not granted his predecessor Willie Randolph. But will he REALLY be able to choose his own staff? And if indeed he does, will it be much different from the one that was in place in game 162?  MetsToday.com's Joe Janish takes a look:

Mets Need A Catcher?
Rumor Mill

Well, that's what SI.com's Jon Heyman said yesterday on Mike Francesa's Miked Up yesterday. When you take that rumor and put it together with the rumor I heard yesterday (about Pudge Rodriguez telling the Mets that he was willing to come to NY to be the lader the team is seeking), I think you can add the backstop position to possible targets for the offseason.

2008 All-Gotham Team: Div II & III Squad
College

Selecting the All Gotham Teams is hard.  Selecting the All Gotham Division II & III team, well, it makes picking the Division I team seem easy.  Trying to determine who is the best – after taking into account level of competition – is no easy task.  Division II versus Division III is a rough comparision, especially in Gotham where the BEAST of the EAST, the New Jersey Athletic Conference resides.

Stadium Memories: Michael Burke, That Irish SOB
Yankees
Written by Darren Viola

Alistair Mundy's ascot, that's what it was...Alistair Mundy's dandy ascot. After all these years I've finally been able to pinpoint former Yankee president/owner Michael Burke's (pictured, left) rediculi éclat de mode sense. (Then again it might have been that unfashionable Old Spice/turtlewreck sweater connection of his, so who knows!)

Now, while this discovery might not be as nootropic-poppin' as finding out that multi-flasking Clu Gulager was in the 60's kookifried outré folk group Miriam or that Ron Asheton of the Stooges was seriously tight with origi-Stooge, Larry Fine, and traded zany hair-pulling sound effects at the Elisha Cooked Actor's Home in L.A. with him (Asheton, I believe, was moonlighting at the time for the prestigious National Eye-Goink Monthly)…but it'll do.

The Met Who Would Be King
Rumor Mill
Written by Mark Healey
Monday, 29 September 2008
The Mets, say many, need a leader.  A gritty type ballplayer with a winning resume and a World Series ring seems to be the consensus of media and fans alike.  One player that fits that description has, according to a baseball official, has made it known to the front office of the New York Mets that he's available.  Based on his resume, he'd be a perfect fit.

Bring The Curtain Down
Mets
Written by Mark Healey

The Mets' inability to perform up to expectations is no sin in and of itself. It is their arrogance in continuing to perpetrate the belief that they are among the league's elite teams, all evidence accumulated over the last two years to the contrary, that is truly unforgivable. - Wallace Matthews, Newsday, Sept. 23, 2008

About a month ago, the New York Mets were playing very good baseball.  So good, in fact, that Mets' VP Tony Bernazard decided to end his embargo of the nasty New York Media to talk with NY Daily News columnist John  Harper.  So for whatever reason, whether they needed to change leadership to shake off the effects of last September's collapse, or the new manager has made some personal impact on players such as Delgado and Jose Reyes, the Manuel Mets barely resemble the Randolph Mets.

Three For Gotham
Mets
Written by Mark Healey
Friday, 26 September 2008
It comes down to this; three games against the Florida Marlins.  The high-priced, big city Gotham Goliath against the small market, sub-.500 Fish.  Because of the large shadow cast by the New York Yankees, the fan base of the New York Mets always seems to cast itself in the underdog role, the “working man's” team as it were.  Well, the Florida Marlins, who have won as many World Series in their 15-year existence as the Mets  have in 46, are really the underdog this weekend.  It's a role they love and relish.  (Left, Johan Santana - Photo by B.
