High & Tight: Rules Are Made To Be Broken
Mets
Written by Jimmy Scott
Monday, 11 August 2008
(Editor's Note)  Future Hall Of Famer Jimmy Scott has graciously agreed to share his blog "Jimmy Scott's High & Tight" with Gotham Baseball Magazine.  Thisd is the latest installment.  For more on Jimmy Scott, go to his website. - MH

There's a lesson for us all when someone makes a spontaneous decision that affects more than just him/herself: There will be untied loose ends. I know, I sound like a serial killer covering his (or her, let's be fair) tracks. In my case, when I made a quick decision to shun the media - all media - this season in favor of communicating only on my website, I forgot about certain commitments that had previously been made.

Is Omar Asleep at the Wheel?
Mets
Written by Joe Janish
Wednesday, 30 July 2008
A week ago, it was suggested that the Yankees "beat" the Mets to Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte (they did, for the record). Then out of nowhere, Brian Cashman pulled a second highway robbery in acquiring future Hall of Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez for streaky reliever Kyle Farnsworth.  In the meantime, the Phillies upgraded their rotation with Joe Blanton, the Angels acquired Mark Teixeira from the Braves for Casey Kotchman, the Dodgers picked up Casey Blake, the Indians grabbed Anthony Reyes, and the  Astros, of all teams, added Randy Wolf to their rotation.

Shouldering The Blame
Mets
Written by Joe Janish
Tuesday, 29 July 2008
(Editor's Note) For weeks, MetsToday.com's Joe Janish, a former college baseball player and coach at St Peter's, has been concerned about Mets' right-hander John Maine's mechanics.  On his own site, and on GothamSportsRadio.com's “Live From Mickey Mantle's”, he has been quite vehement in his ooinion about Maine's inconsistency being a mechanical one, not a location (an opinion espoused by yours truly).  With the news that Maine has a mild strain og his rotator cuff, it seems like Janish has been right along. Below is a story he wrote just before Maine's injury on Monday night, and it's a damn good read. - MH

As mentioned by Lee Mazzilli a few weeks ago on SNY (and at MetsToday last week), John Maine has a minor mechanical flaw in his delivery that is causing his command to be off. In fact, that same flaw is likely the reason for Maine's "shoulder stiffness"

(Editor's Note)  Please join me in welcoming future Hall Of Fame pitcher Jimmy Scott to the Gotham family of writers.  He's been a terrific pitcher for so long, and we've developed a great friendship over the years.  It's a pleasure to have him on board.  His perspective on all things baseball is quite amazing - MH

There are lots of rumors floating around. With the trading deadline coming upon us rather quickly, I thought this would be a good time to talk about something other than a team’s place in the standings. Today, I want to let you in on what it's like to be traded. I'll do it from three perspectives - Player, Wife and Kid.

Manny And The Mets
Rumor Mill
Written by Mark Healey
Monday, 28 July 2008
The biggest difference between the Winter Meetings and the July 31st trade deadline Rumor Mill is the source of information. Given that free agency and walk-year trades dominate in December, the player agents are usually where the most accurate information comes from.  However, at the non-waiver trade deadline, there's no better source of info than the scouts (who are actually being assigned players to monitor for said trades) and the baseball execs who are fielding the very calls pertaining to players and trades that on the record, they deny.

HOF Weekend:
Latest News
Written by Marty Appel
Sunday, 27 July 2008
(Editor's Note) Marty Appel wears a lot of hats.  In addition to being the owner and President of Marty Appel Public Relations, he is one of the finest baseball authors working today.  To my greatest delight, he also serves as a Senior Editor for Gotham Baseball Magazine.  He is currently at Cooperstown for this weekend's Hall Of Fame induction ceremonies, so I thought it fitting to share this article by Marty on one of this weekend's inductees; former MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn (left).  He worked with the late Kuhn in the former commish's 1987 memoir, "Hardball: The Education of a Baseball Commissioner."   - MH

Dishonorable Ruling
College
Written by Chip Armonaitis
Sunday, 27 July 2008
The name Caleb Campbell may mean nothing to most Gotham Baseball readers.  Some might recognize the name once it is given some context, but wonder how it impact Gotham Baseball.  It also opens a whole can of political issues, some of which could influence whom you would vote for as President of the US.

Campbell, a 7th round selection of the Detroit Lions, played his football at Army.  He was planning on attending the Lions camp, with a good shot at making the team, utilizing the Army’s Alternative Service Orders, which allowed Campbell to play football while working as a recruiter for the Army.  Earlier this week, the Army rescinded that policy, ending Campbell’s participation.
