Gotham Baseball Magazine is proud to announce our selections for the Division II and III All Gotham Team for 2007.
Gotham Baseball Magazine is proud to announce our selections for the Division II and III All Gotham Team for 2007.
This team features, quite simply, the best players in the Gotham Area who you have never heard of. Which is a shame,
considering that Gotham is home to the best Division III conference in the country, home of the 2007 National
Champions – Kean University.
There is no shortage of quality baseball played in Gotham on all three levels of college baseball. The following
players are being celebrated for their accomplishments, and the team below is not intended to be a comparison of
relative talents, competition or professional potential.
Catcher – Gerard Haran (The College of New Jersey) hara
After re-writing the TCNJ record books, Haran graduates a three-time Division III All- America, much to the relief
of pitchers throughout the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Haran is an on-base and slugging machine, with OPS of
1.108 in 2007 after slugging 14 home runs and driving in 53. Remarkably, both numbers were three-year lows, as teams
simply pitched around the slugger, or in same cases, at him, as he was hit by a team-high 12 pitches. Haran was the
NJAC’s Player of the Year, for the second time, and is the Lions All-Time leader in home runs, with 48.
First Base – Frank Quintana (Felician)
Quintana, a native of Miami, is another player that opponents are not going to miss, not after a season that saw 146
total bases in 49 games, and a Division II All-America Honorable Mention designation. Quintana belted 16 home runs,
drove in 59 runs, and stole 23 bases in 29 attempts for the Falcons, while batting a cool .405. With an OPS of
1.272, Quintana scored 59 runs for a young Felician team, and was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
(CACC) Player of the Year.
Second Base – Joey Cacchiola (Ramapo)
The NJAC’s Freshman of the Year, Cacchiola was the leading hitter for a surprising Ramapo (29-13, 11-7), batting a
crisp .413 in 34 games. Add to that 19 walks and two hit-by-pitch, and it is easy to see that Cacchiola spent as
much time on the base paths when he was on offense as defense. A slugging percentage of .642 shows that Cacchiola
was not a slap hitter either, as does his 12 doubles, three homers and 34 runs batted in.
Shortstop – Jose Fulgencio (New Jersey City University)
The NJAC had three outstanding shortstops in 2007, but we are going to go with Fulgencio, an ABCA second team
Mid-Atlantic All-America selection, who also gathered an honorable mention in the NJAC. Fulgencio gets the nod for
his superior offensive production, as the nephew of former Mets shortstop Rafael Santana hammered out 22 extra base
hits en route to a .418 batting average for the Gothic Knights, the cellar dweller in the powerful NJAC. Fulgencio
drove in a team high 44 runs in 37 games, while stealing 20 bases in 22 attempts.
Third Base – Matt Arburr (Pace)
The 17th round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals, the mammoth Arburr (6-4, 250) was a force at the plate
irregardless of where he was stationed defensively. Arburr pounded out 12 home runs while driving in 46 for the
Setters during 2007. Named to numerous Division II All Northeast Regions teams, Arburr was second amongst the
Setters in batting average, compiling a .315 mark.
Outfield – Adric Saxon (Caldwell)
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, Saxon roared onto the collegiate scene, batting .356
with 13 home runs and 56 runs batted in 40 games for the Cougars. Saxon 1.119 OPS was an indication of the offensive
weapon he was, as he led the Cougars offense throughout the year.
Outfield – Joe Gunshor (Stevens Institute of Technology)
The Skyline Conference Player of the Year, the sophomore outfielder give the Ducks confidence that their resurgence
in baseball should continue for at least the next two years. Gunshor took over in centerfield and hit a sizzling
.429, with six home runs and 36 runs batted in. With a .673 slugging percentage, Gunshor also added speed to his
power output, stealing 11 bases in 13 attempts.
Outfield - Mike Guandango (William Paterson University)
Choosing between any of the three William Paterson outfielders is a challenge, but Guadango gets the nod based on
his somewhat superior power statistics. Slugging at .618 mark, Guandango led the Pioneers with a four home runs and
41 rbi, while finishing third in average with a slick .410 average. Just a freshman, Guadango should be a force for
the next two seasons (at least) in the NJAC.
Designated Hitter – Thomas Reo (Molloy)
With a slugging percentage of near .700, Reo slugged his way to a 12-home run season while driving in 54 runs in 47
games. With a batting average of .349, the free swinging slugger had 36 extra base hits on the season, and was a
consistent threat in the middle of the lineup.
Starting Pitcher – Joe Augustine/Dan Zeffiro (Kean University)
Proof that pitching wins championships, this Kean duo was a combined 18-3 with 13 complete games in 23 starts for
the Cougars. Both have signed contracts as undrafted free agents (Zeffiro with the Reds, Augustine the Royals). Few
teams in college baseball had 1-2 punches on the mound this season, or any season.
Closer – Jeff Calabrese (Felican)
After Quintana slugged them into the lead, it was up to Calabrese to keep the Falcons in front, and with a 4-1,
3.41, save ledger, he usually did. Just a freshman, Calabrese give Caldwell a reason to feel secure late in the game
for seasons to come.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Frank Quintana (Felician)
TEAM OF THE YEAR: Kean (Division III national champions)
