Here’s a look at how Long Island teams did at the New York State playoffs: Class AA: You'd like to think Union Proctor (Section III) scored its two runs off Massapequa early in the game, but it made the game interesting when it put up the runs in the bottom of the seventh for one of the most dramatic New York State playoff victories in recent years. In the Class AA semifinal game in Binghamton, Massapequa's (21-8) Jeff Giordano and UP's (22-5) A.J. Bates squared off in a pitcher's duel that lasted the entire contest, but ended when UP finally struck in the last half inning of the game on June 9. Giordano allowed two base hits and left runners at the corners in the seventh before Mike Mandarino replaced him on the mound. UP converted on a suicide squeeze, played small ball, stole some bases and won it when Joe Barry singled. Giordano had both runs tagged onto his earned run total and also allowed eight hits, one walk and had six strike outs in a valiant effort. Class A: This was a monumental year for Islip. It hadn't won a league title since 1951, so winning a Long Island and New York State title for the first time fit right into this year's schedule. Islip catcher Tom Butler had struck out in the third inning and allowed three stolen bases on his watch, so when Johnson City (Section IV) intentionally walked Chris Burke to get to him in the top of the seventh inning he had enough. He hit a two-run single which scored the eventual game winners in the 4-3 win. Class B: Babylon had a mediocre regular season. It didnt even win its league title. But, when playoffs roll around, the Panthers are the real deal. They beat Eden (Section VI), 16-4, to win the NYS Class B title for the first time. Babylon's (20-11) Mark Millano and Rich Dellisola went 3-for-4. Dellisola had four RBIs. Players of the Week: Suffolk: Tom Butler: Islip: Despite striking out in the game and allowing three runners to steal against him, catcher Tom Butler had the game winning hit in the NYS Class AA final against Johnson City. Nassau: Jeff Giordano: Massapequa: Allowed eight hits, one walk and had six strike outs in the NYS Class AA semifinals. Other news: Ward Melville’s A.J. Nunziato won the Carl Yastrzemski Award as the best all around player in Suffolk County, while Hills East’s John Mincone won the Paul Gibson Award as the best pitcher in Suffolk County.
