Friends, after looking at the early returns from the Gotham 2008 election, both online and from the crowds that fill Mickey Mantle's Restaurant and other live venues Gotham Baseball Magazine's editorial staff has broadcast from these past several days, it has become painfully clear to me that this publisher's creation, the "Vintage Cover" is not going to be your selection for the latest cover design of Gotham Baseball Magazine.
Yet, I am proud of the campaign we have run – we took the high road.
We stood up proudly for our past, while still looking towards the
future of "The City Game". We reminded Gotham Nation that it's all
right to celebrate this city's baseball history, even when the Dodgers
or Giants aren't involved.
Because when it comes down to it, The City of New York is and always
will be synonymous with Baseball History. While some other cities
pretend to lay claim to being the "new" home of baseball greatness, we
all know that New York outshines them all, and has done so for over 100
years.
This may be the end of this particular cover design's present journey,
but make no mistake, it is surely not the end of Gotham's love for its
baseball past. For the tradition and the majesty of baseball seasons
gone by will always have a home here at Gotham – as it does in the
hearts of all the fans that supported this cover design, and in the
soul of every mother's son and daughter who have ever picked up a broom
stick and tried to whale one past the second sewer.
The next time you see a faded box on a building wall, or a kid hopping
a fence and risk getting grounded for trampling the neighbor's flower
box to save his or her ball, know that the state of "The City Game" is
alive and well.
But for now, I encourage all of you to vote for the two remaining cover
designs, both of which are beautifully created, and deserving of your
vote. I promise that while this is the end of this particular campaign
– "The Vintage Cover" will be back.
