For weeks, Gotham Nation has been voting to decide which of three fantastic cover designs would grace the eighth cover of Gotham Baseball Magazine. Balloting has taken place online and at live Gotham venues like Mickey Mantle's Restaurant.
After asking family, colleagues, friends and total strangers which they liked the most, the time has come to unveil the winner of the Gotham '08 Election.
The envelope please….
.WINNER: THE LIGHTNING COVER!
After a dismal end to a season, the fan base was immediately energized by one off-season move, and the landscape of Gotham has been changed since. When the Mets traded a group of prospects for Johan Santana, the Mets' fortunes changed in an unexpected flash, much like a lightning bolt streaking across a night sky on a hot summer night. That same flash can be found in the electric left arm of the new ace of the Mets, who has already made an impression on the Shea faithful.
It was this kind of imagery that we here at Gotham had in mind when this cover was designed. Apparently, most of you in Gotham Nation liked what you saw, as the cover was the wire-to-wire winner both online and in live balloting.
But the election itself has been the true success story here. Everyone we spoke with during the voting either online or in person showed such passion for their favorite design, and we often found little handwritten notes on ballots meant to further influence our staff.
Fans like that who go the extra mile are what Gotham is all about. That's the passion we love here. It tells us that the many long hours we've committed to bring you more of the New York Game than anyone else out there is time well spent.
Thanks again to everyone who voted – if you registered and told us who you voted for, then we'll be contacting you in order to fulfill our promise of sending you a year's worth of Gotham Baseball Magazine. Keep stopping by and telling us what you think – when Gotham Nation speaks, we listen.
