The Amazins' show that their scouting knows no bounds, as the Mets announce the signing of Dutch third baseman Marinus Vernooij.
The New York Mets announced the signing of 18 year old Marinus Vernooij, an 18 year old third baseman, and native of Holland.
Vernooij, signed out of a Rotterdam high school, is a 6'2'' 200 infielder who has been selected to the Dutch National Team at every level since age seven. A product of Dutch National Team manager Robert Eenhoorn's baseball academy, Vernooij's last action came with the Dutch 1st Division Door Tridents, where he led the team in RBI and his team won their League Championship. In addition, he played for the Dutch Janior National team which won the bronze medal at the European Championships.
"I am very thrilled and excited to be given the opportunity to play for a Major League organization like the New York Mets," stated Vernooij. "The Mets are a great organization with a lot of good players, and I am going to work hard to become one of them."
This signing is yet another reminder of the reach of the Mets' international scouting efforts. "We are being very aggressive in the international market, and Marinus is an indication of that," said Ismael Cruz, Mets Director of International Operations. "The Mets are going to be players in every market where baseball is played. This has been a team effort among the entire international scouting department."
