After losing the 2000 World Series to the New York Yankees, the
crosstown New York Mets declined to pursue marquee free agent Alex
Rodriguez. At the time, then-general manager Steve Phillips cited a
unwillingness to sign a "24-and-1" player (a term he says he now
regrets), and as recently as last week, says it was a decision that he
still agrees with.

Mets fans are probably pretty down in the bumps these days. But, tyey
do have a treat in store for them if they read Dana Brand's book, "Mets
Fan". Mike Silva, the host of NY Baseball Talk, attended the book launch last
Sunday, and said the event was "a Mets blogasphere version of a “blind
date”.

Message to Mets fans: enough complaining. Do you realize how good we have it? Somewhere along the lines, fans clad in the blue and orange have
turned on the Mets. But the postseason isn’t God-given to any
team—certainly not Mets fans. What has happened to this loyal fan base,
people who turned out in greater numbers to see the 1964 team lose 109
games than the crosstown Yankees drew with a world champion?
