A busy day for SI Alum Robinson Cano, and the Baby Bombers kept to their winning ways.
It was a long Saturday for Robinson Cano.
The New York Yankees’ starting second baseman began his day in the Bronx for a 1:00 game against the Kansas City Royals. In the game, Cano went 4 for 5, with a double and a triple for three RBIs. The game, which was no pitchers duel, saw 24 runs scored and took just over four hours to finish. The Yankees won the game by a score of 16-8.
Immediately following the game, Cano rushed to Staten Island in order to make it in time for his pre-game ceremony. The ceremony honoring Cano began with an introduction which included some of Cano’s accomplishments. The PA announcer spoke of his 2 years in Staten Island, and continued to say that Cano was the first Staten Island alumni to make it to the All-Star game, a feat he accomplished in 2006.
Following the introduction, Cano was presented with a plaque by baby Bombers’ GM Jane Rogers before unveiling his number 17 to be placed next to current teammate Chien-Ming Wang and Jason Anderson, the first ever SI Yankee to make it to the big leagues.
After the ceremony, Cano threw out the first pitch. He then shook hands with all of the current Yankees’ players before making his way back into the clubhouse. Many of the Yankees players were simply awestruck. “It was definitely something we needed to see,” first baseman Braedyn Pruitt said. “It’s good to see someone who has been in the same spot as us and make it by working the way up to the highest level. It just gives us some encouragement and something to shoot for.”
In 2001 and 2002 with Staten Island, Cano had a .274 average with only 1 HR and 17 RBI’s. As you can tell, it was the aftermath of being with the baby Bombers that allowed Cano’s number to be retired.
Following the on-the-field festivities, Cano joined members of his family in a suite at Richmond County Bank Ballpark before leaving during the fourth inning.
GAME RECAP (Lowell Spinners vs. Staten Island Yankees, August 4, 2007)
Staten Island took an early 2-0 lead into the third inning. The Spinners fought back to make the game as close as 5-3, but the Yankees added on two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Shortstop Justin Snyder had 2 RBI’s. Damon Sublett and Austin Krum each had one. Pitcher Ryan Pope started the game for the Yankees and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five H, no runs, and striking out four. Craig Heyer came in for three innings of relief to earn the win. Jordan Craft got the loss for the Lowell Spinners. Bombers’ reliever Jonathan Ortiz came in the ninth with no outs and the bases loaded in a four-run game. He struck out one and forced a double play to end an exciting night with a win for the Staten Island Yankees.
FINAL: Yankees 7, Spinners 3
