When Gotham Baseball Magazine first opened for business, we pledged to
be more accessible to our readership than any publication. I think, to
a large extent, we've done that. But as we always to strive to do
more, we're asking you, the fans, to choose the final design for our
latest edition, "The City Game".
I'd like to thank Mets GM Omar Minaya for the title of this issue. He so eloquently stated it at the press conference back in February to welcome Johan Santana to the Mets, saying "Baseball is The City Game". Thanks to Minaya, the Wilpons, and Johan Santana, Mets fans have a lot to look forward to in 2008.
While a brilliant illustration of Santana by Gotham Baseball Magazine's John Pennisi is the main theme, there are three designs to choose from;
The first one we'll call "The Lightning Cover" (Choice A), which depicts a classic Gotham night skyline, with a dramatic lightning srike across the sky. The concept here (a collabortion between myself and GBM Publisher Gene Berardelli) is the left-handed lightning in the arm of Santana, and the impact he will have on Gotham.
The second design concept, "The Vintage Cover" (Choice B) is all Berardelli, as his love for the vintage New York Game (which is one of the reasons why GBM sponsors the upcoming Gotham Cup every year) is depicted here.
The third is one I'll take credit for, is "The Stadium Cover", as a dramatic photo of Shea Stadium by Michael O'Kane helps set the stage for the best pitcher is baseball's first year as a Met, and marks the last year of Shea Stadium.
Take a look at all three!
Which one do you prefer? Frankly, the entire Gotham Baseball team (and our extended family members) are split three ways on this one. So, we're hoping our "26th man" can seal the deal for us!
