Gotham Baseball Magazine, founded in 2005, is the only periodical
dedicated to comprehensive coverage of New York area baseball. A
subsidiary of Gotham Sports Media LLC, (www.gothamsportsmedia.com) its
mission is to fully cover the past, present and future of the New York
game.
The company and magazine were created by Owner and Executive Editor Mark Healey. Healey, a Brooklyn native, spent most of his childhood dreaming of playing baseball, and has spent the last decade covering it. A graduate of Queens College, Mark has published in all forms of media; print, broadcast, online and magazines. Broadcast jobs at WSTC-AM (producer, reporter, anchor) in Stamford, CT, WRKL-AM in Rockland County, NY, (Evening News Director/Anchor) gave way to a seven-plus year stint at the Associated Press, the largest and most respected news agency in the world.
At AP Sports, he was given the opportunity to cover the NFL, NHL, NBA, as well as college athletics. However, longing to be a full-time baseball writer, Mark (pictured left) took on several free-lance assignments to develop his reporting skills along the way.
One notable assignment was his serving as the Brooklyn Skyline's beat reporter for the Brooklyn Cyclones, beginning with the club's first-ever season in 2001. Following years of writing for other baseball magazines such as Mets Inside Pitch, in April of 2005, Mark decided it was time to cover baseball full-time, and Gotham Baseball Magazine was born.
It didn't take long for folks to start taking notice, as Amazon.com named GBM the Best New Sports Magazine of 2005. The Gotham Baseball Magazine website, www.gothambaseballmagazine.com, features news stories, photos and features on the New York game, from the big leagues to the minor leagues, from the Old Time game to the high school game, and daily columns from a full roster of writers. The magazine is available through subscription and on newsstands.
Gotham Baseball Magazine is available in 28 states, and with subscribers in Iowa, Kentucky, Washington, California, Texas, Florida as well as the Tri-State area, fast becoming a nationally read publication. Much of the credit for that kind of widespread distribution gos to Owner / Publisher and Legal Counsel Gene Berardelli.
Berardeli was born, bred and still lives Brooklyn, where he maintains his general law practice. He oversees the legal needs and distribution operations for GBM, and is Gotham Sports Media's lead negotiator. He graduated summa cum laude from Manhattan College with a BA in Government & Asian Studies, with a minor in Economics in 1999, and received his J.D. from Quinnipiac University School of Law in Hamden, CT in 2002 – at age 23.
