Well, that's what SI.com's Jon Heyman said yesterday on Mike Francesa's Miked Up yesterday. When you take that rumor and put it together with the rumor I heard yesterday (about Pudge Rodriguez telling the Mets that he was willing to come to NY to be the lader the team is seeking), I think you can add the backstop position to possible targets for the offseason.

The Mets, say many, need a leader.  A gritty type ballplayer with a winning resume and a World Series ring seems to be the consensus of media and fans alike.  One player that fits that description has, according to a baseball official, has made it known to the front office of the New York Mets that he's available.  Based on his resume, he'd be a perfect fit.

The biggest difference between the Winter Meetings and the July 31st trade deadline Rumor Mill is the source of information. Given that free agency and walk-year trades dominate in December, the player agents are usually where the most accurate information comes from.  However, at the non-waiver trade deadline, there's no better source of info than the scouts (who are actually being assigned players to monitor for said trades) and the baseball execs who are fielding the very calls pertaining to players and trades that on the record, they deny.

Sure, the Rumor Mill's been quiet of late.  But that's because the Mets and Yankees are not really involved (at least not yet) in any of the sexy names that are being bandied about recently.  Jason Bay?  Many baseball officials we spoke with think he's going to the Rays, and if the Pirates make the deal they really want, that may be the only deal they make.
