Joba Chamberlain's first start as a Yankee wasn't exactly what he
envisioned, but it was the first step in what will be a brilliant
career. Sure, the Yankees will take a step back (or two) as they try
to reconfigure their rotation and bullpen over the coming weeks, but
this team is so set up for the next decade, it's scary.
Yankee-haters are beyond giddy these days. The $200 million underachievers are under .500, Phil Hughes is on the DL, Ian Kennedy has struggled, Andy Pettitte looks frazzled and Kyle Farnsworth's stuff looks flatter than ever. Well, I hate to break this to you, but there are about 20 more guys in this Yankee system that the rest of baseball is drooling over. Dan McCutchen, Mark Melancon, Zach McAllister, and a host of others are nearly ready.
So, Joba first start was shaky. So, the bridge to Mariano is a little creaky. Before the All-Star break, this Yankee team should have a pretty good idea od whether it will contend for the rest of 2008. Either way, that figures to be when the fun will start.
